Education Study Results: Federal Role in Public Education Position

April 6, 2012
By

On March 25, 2012, the LWV of the United States Board approved a new Education position. This was a result of studies conducted all over the country. The LWV of Montgomery County VA was one of the participating groups in that study. To see the full report on this new national position go to: http://www.lwv.org/content/federal-role-public-education-position. In short, 6 key components were identified as being the role of federal government: Provide leadership and vision to promote a quality education for all children; Provide broad common standards developed by educational experts upon which states and local education agencies can build; Provide a suggested curricular structure or framework as a guide to state and local education agencies to develop their own curricula; Provide a national assessment that clearly informs teachers, parents and students about how well individual students have mastered criteria established at the national level; Provide a national assessment that informs districts how well their populations compare to other populations similar to theirs; and Provide a combination of competitive grants and non-competitive funding to states and local school districts to achieve equity among states and populations. Our thanks to all who participated in our local study. Consensus studies are never easy. It

2012 Virginia Legislation Affecting Education

January 8, 2012
By

The Legislative Year is just beginning and already there are 12 different bills placed on the table for our State Legislators to study. We have included a new page here to provide basic information on those bills along with the information needed to track those bills as they progress. Richmond Sunlight provides a great service to citizens by providing this information and a means of tracking these bills. This allows League Members and other citizens an opportunity to “weight in” on the discussions long before the bill is ready to come to vote. Whether you support or oppose a particular bill, you can start expressing your thoughts and/or feelings about it early in the process. You can contact the sponsor of the bill or those who are co-sponsors. You can contact committee members for the committee assigned the task of reviewing the bill and perhaps help to identify issues that allow for a compromise bill to be developed that will better meet citizen’s needs. Perhaps you will be the person to point out some point that no one else has considered that could affect whether the bill goes forward or not for a vote in the Legislature. While you will

“21st Century Skills” – quite a catch phrase, but what does it really mean?

January 3, 2012

On the commoncore.org website there is page entitled “Debating “21st Century Skills“. The page provides a selection of links to more information on “21st Century Skills” as they apply to education. After a quick review of many of the articles, one word came to mind: “definition”. What is meant by that is while the phrase “21st Century Skills” is used over and over and over again, there does not appear to be a clear and concise definition of what comprises “21st Century Skills”. One author, Mike Rose (21st Century Skills: Education’s New Cliche’) specifically uses the word cliche’ as he notes that: “In one document I read, the phrase 21st century skills was repeated 25 times in less than two pages.”(para.2) This author also sought to identify these skills and notes that: “There are a number of definitions and lists, some running up to nine pages.”(para.3). In closing Mr. Rose notes: “This is a promising time for education. Reform is a priority in a number of states, and the federal government is about to infuse an unprecedented amount of money into the schools. All this is happening at a time of great anxiety about the economy, so a focus on

A New Look – Education Resources

January 2, 2012
By

The Consensus Study on Education is completed, but much work remains to be done. Expanding our own education on the topic and sharing that information with others is one of the key components to making sure that changes in educational policy move us forward. So, you will find a bit of a different look to this site. Key categories have been identified based upon the materials discussed and information received from members. More areas can (and will) be added as they are identified. Hopefully, this will be a useful resource for LWVMCVA members and for the public. Whether you are a member or not, feel free to make suggestions for additional materials to be added or new areas (topics) you would like to see added. You can do that by leaving a comment on any of these discussion articles or by using the “Contact Us” link at the top of the page. Also, please use the share buttons to send information out to others via social media. We hope you find this information useful.
